The 5K May Free Tournament has just started today and already 620 of the 1000 players available have registered. One of the limitations of the Real Time Gaming slots tournament software is that only 1000 people can register for any one tournament.

Even though this is only the first of the month, already more then half of the available players allowed have registered. I have already signed up and played this tournament; I am currently sitting in 65th place with a little more than 39,000 points scored.

That probably isn’t going to win me any money, though. The prizes are awarded to the top 70 finishers and with more than 400 people left to play I’m fairly sure I’ll be bumped out soon.

May Freeroll Prizes and Info

There is a total prize pool of $5000 for this freeroll. The first place player gets $1,200! 2nd place gets $750; 3rd receives $500. The top 9 places will get $90 or more; the other top 70 will receive prizes between $50 and $12.50.

You will start with 30,000 credits and 30 minutes of playtime. The best practice that I have found is timing the droughts on the reels with your lower bets (20.00 spins) and betting the max (100.00 spins) all other times.

The worst thing you can do in this tournament is hit a large payline with a small bet. You can only count on getting a set number of features or large paylines won. It is very important to hit each one with a maximum bet.

Featured Game

As I’m in a hurray to get this post up, I will only briefly go through the featured slot – Goldbeard

Goldbeard is a pirate themed video slot machine that has a substitute symbol of Goldbeard
and a Gold Coin scatter. Goldbeard can only appear on reels 1 and 5 during normal play and all paylines are doubled when Goldbeard is present. Receiving more than one of the Gold Coin scatters will win you a multiple of your total bet, but 3 scatters do not trigger anything in this game.

Previous Tournament Results

There have been around an average of 800 to 1200 people that have played in the previous three rounds of the tournament. This number has been dropping as the people who have already qualified are likely not to return to the next week’s game. This means you probably have as much as a 1 in 3 chance to qualify for the tournament this week.

The winner from this past week’s tournament round took home 25% of the total pool which was about $1825. The rest of the top 200 players also get a piece of the prize pool, but the important thing is getting the invitation to the big showdown in January.

As I stated before, this tournament is not free to enter, but only costs $5 to enter and you will receive a much larger starting balance then you normal would have with $500. Additional re-buys are also only $5.

Reel Deal Slots

The Reel Deal slots game is a knockoff of the Deal or No Deal TV show. The icons are of the lovely ladies, the host, the banker, and different amounts of money. Along with that there is a Gold Bar wild symbol, a Deal Button scatter and a bonus Briefcase.

There are 20 paylines in this featured slot and there are the big wins that you will get are going to be the when you activate either the Bonus Round of the Free Spins features. To receive 15 free spins, you must get 3 or more of the Deal Button scatter symbols on the screen at the same time.

In order to activate the Bonus Round, you must get the Bonus Briefcase in each of the three middle reels on the screen as shown above. You will then be taken to the bonus round seen below.

This is where you may become familiar with things. You will first have to choose a briefcase that you will have to hold on to. Then you must select 6 briefcases out of the ones that are remaining. Well, sorry about that; but if you finish in the top 200 places in any of these four week long tournaments, you will receive a Free Entry into the 2011 January Showdown.

If you take a look at the tournament lobby above, you will see that there is a little more than 1200 people who participated in the first round of the Holiday feast. That means you have to finish in the top 1/6th of all players in order to win an invite.

Why does this matter? The 2011 January Showdown is a slots tournament that is by invite only. You can not buy into this tournament. A total of 800 invites will be given away. This means you have 3 more opportunities to win an invite to this exclusive tournament.

The January Showdown has a winner-take-all $50K prize. With only 800 people competing for this prize, your chances of winning are a lot higher then they would normally be. The 2011 January Showdown is going to start on Monday, January 3, and will run until Sunday, January 9.

Holiday Feast Slots Tournament

Let me explain a little bit more about the Holiday Feast tournament. It is more than just a way to qualify for the January Showdown.

If you take a look back up at the tournament lobby screenshot, you will see that there is a total prize pool of a little more than $14K.

This prize pool is split up amongst the players with the top 200 scores. As well as the free invite, you will also win some money back.

How much money are we talking about here? Take a look to the right at the Prizes and Current Leaderboard. The first place prize gets 25% of the prize pool. If there were no more money put into the pot from rebuys, that person would win about $3600.

If you place between 101 and 200, you’re only looking at winning about $7 to $10 when it’s all said and done.

After you register for one of the four rounds of the Holiday Feast, you will have a starting balance of $500. This is more than you would normally start with in any free slots tournament. This gives you more room to maneuver as your not in danger of busting out after a few spins.

You can always rebuy for an additional $5 if you would like to try to make it into the top 200. Below is a quick look at the tournament information for the next 3 rounds of the Holiday Feast. My favorite featured slot of the three weeks is round 4 – The Reel Deal.

Now this Easter Week Long Freeroll isn’t over yet. For those of you who think it is too late to join, you still have a legitimate shot of getting on the leader board. Although first place is going to be hard to reach now.

By my estimates, it usually took some luck (obviously), but also about 10+ hours of time and 4000+ spins to get past the $10,000 mark before. It’s a war of attrition and usually the best way to fight it is by doing no more than an hour or 2 chunks. This is when your mind will be the most sharp. I tend to make bad decisions when I’ve been playing for longer than an hour.

Remember, all the real money prizes are for those you get in the top 10 and there is still a day and a half left in the tournament.

How I did in the Easter Week Long Freeroll

I got going for a little while. The reels started off very slowly and were only giving back more than I bet one out of 10 pulls. For that reason, I started out with the minimum bet of 0.20 for the first 100 spin or so. If you trying to make the free part of this freeroll last longer than 10 minutes, your going to have to wait until you have won one of the features before you can start to think about raising your bets.

I really don’t think that you should consider your tournament started before you win the bonus round or free spins at least once. You have to see a couple of cycles of free spins and bonus rounds to be able to have an idea as to around what time the feature will be triggered.

The frustrating times are when you go for over 300+ spins without triggering a feature. There is almost no way to win when this happens. Here is the only thing you should do when you feel this scenario happening:

If this happens early in the tournament – Stop spinning. Put the coin level to it’s lowest. Click the autoplay button. Set the spins to 250 or 500. Click start and go away for a while. You will come back to a bonus round feature almost every time. From there, reset your internal clock and start paying attention again.

If this happens later in a tournament (when you have more money) – Stop spinning. Put the Bet at either $2 or $5 dollars. Click autoplay. Set number of spins to anything you want. Set it to stop on any win that exceeds 50. Stop if the credits increase by 50. Stop if credits decrease by 100.

This is the method I use after what I consider the breakout when you have won a large paying feature. It’s all about timing of the larger bets. If you get a large bet wrong, you have to go right back down and try to make up what you lost.

The easiest way to lose is by betting more than 1/20th of your balance at any given time. The feeling of losing what you worked hard for will compel you to try to get it back with another mistake. After that, you say what the heck and go with large bets until you bust.

Knowing that the reels could be cold, the better solution is to take a break and set the auto spins. Then come back with a fresh outlook. I’ve gone from $9,000 and on the leaderboard to bust within 10 minutes before. You have to keep a cool head or your gonna crack and lose all your money.

By the way, I lasted about 1000 spins with the Free entry and $100 balance. I should be about as close to the bottom as possible as I have two cents left that I can’t bet.

How to register

I played in the New Years Celebration Freeroll at Go Casino. I’m sorry I’ve been out of the loop recently, but I’ll be back with a vengeance this month. There were a total of four freeroll slot tournaments that I have found so far this month, but I was too late on getting you to the first one, as the tournament ends today.

Fortunately, there is a second New Years Celebration tournament that starts up this Friday. Since the two tournaments are virtually identical, I’ll explain the details of the upcoming event first before I show you how I did in the first one.

New Years Freeroll Slot Tournament

This tournament starts on Fri, Jan 08 at 8:00PM and will end on Tues, Jan 12 at 8:00PM. This tournament offers a total prize pool of $50,000. Here is how much you can win:

1st place – $15,000
2nd place – $5,000
3rd place – $2,500
4th place – $1,900
5th place – $1,400
6th place – $1,200
7th place – $1,000
8th place – $800
9th place – $700
10th place – $500

Prizes for places 11 – 500 will receive a bonus money from the casino. This money cannot be withdrawn from your account, but this money is free to bet with and can make you some real money that you can cash out. The prizes for places 11 through 20 will receive from $430 to $100 bonus dollars. The next 80 will receive from $95 to $60 in bonus money.

Featured Video Slot Game

The featured slot for the upcoming tournament is the Right Prize, with is based off of the Price is Right slots. This is very similar to some of the other video slots that I’ve shown you in previous posts. This game has 25 paylines, a bonus round, free spins and a wild card to offer and they will be explained shortly. Here is a screenshot of the payouts (it’s easier than writing them all down):

To win 10 Free Spins, you must get three or more of the Opening Door icons on your screen. Getting 4 or 5 doors on the reels isn’t going to get you any more free spins, but they both have very large payouts.

As in most other online video slots, the Wild Logo symbol can be used to substitute for any other icon except the bonus and scatter.

Right Prize Bonus Round

First, in order to get the bonus round, you have to get three bonus wheel icons on the screen, like so:

The Right Prize’s bonus round is called “Chip Drop” and looks suspiciously like Plinko. You have pick one out of seven spots to drop the chip. Each spot at the top has a random corresponding spot below.

You have a total of three chances to drop the chip. The prizes at the bottom of the board correspond to how much you bet on you last spin. There is one top prize and two second, third and fourth prizes.

This mean if you get a third or fourth prize on your first drop, take your second drop to try and get one of the top prizes. I would stay if you get either the first or second prize.

1st New Year’s Freeroll

The only difference with this tournament, besides the date it is played, was the featured game played. This tournament featured the 5 Reel Wheel of Chance video slot that was featured for Thanksgiving.
